Aug 25, 2004, 13:45

Delaware State Police are investigating a bomb hoax that occurred Tuesday, Aug. 24 at Peddlers Village Shopping Center on State Route 24.

At approximately 12:17 p.m. a customer of Casella’s sub shop left the store and saw what he thought was a pipe bomb next to his vehicle.  The man notified an employee of the sub shop, who in turn contacted the state police.

When state police arrived at approximately 12:20 p.m. and concurred that the device looked like a pipe bomb, the shopping center was evacuated and the state police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit (EOD) was called to the scene.

Route 24 was closed east of the shopping center at Sussex Road 284 and west of the shopping center at Sussex Road 277.  An adjacent shopping center and a convenience store across the street were also evacuated.

The device, which consisted of three PVC pipes constructed to look like an explosive device, did not contain any explosive material.

Route 24 was reopened at 4:45 p.m. and the shopping center was reopened at 5:30 p.m.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to call Troop 7 at (302) 644-5020 or Crime Stoppers at (800) TIP-3333.
