In an effort to speed up repairs to docks, piers, bulkheads, rip-rap revetments and other water-based structures damaged in Hurricane Isabel, the the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control has instituted an emergency permitting procedure.

Normally, such repairs require a permit, under the Delaware Subaqueous Lands Act. Under the emergency procedure, waterfront property owners can fill out a one-page application form, fax or mail it to the Wetlands and Subaqueous Lands Section of DNREC and begin the repair work immediately.

According to Laura Herr, program manager, the only requirements for repairs are that structures must be repaired or replaced exactly to pre-storm dimensions and the repairs must be completed in six months.

For an Emergency Repair Application form and/or more information on repairs, contact the Wetlands and Subaqueous Lands Section at (302) 739-4691.
