First Town in the First State
Lewes Forecast
While the City of Lewes has its ocean and bay beaches and some of the best sport-fishing on the East Coast, it is also renowned as the First Town in the First State.
One of Delaware's most historic towns, great pains have been taken to preserve that history through the renovations and resurrections of the town's most historic properties, some dating back to the 1600s.
Founded in 1631 by the Dutch, Lewes attracts thousands of visitors every year to its quaint downtown shopping district with charming shops, pubs and restaurants, and the historic buildings on the town's historic walking tour, including the Zwaanendael Museum. Historic churches and Victorian architecture are other highlights of the self-guided tour.
As for recreational activities, Lewes takes a back seat to no other community on Delaware's coast with deep-sea charters for big game fish in the Atlantic Ocean and fishing for trout, stripers, flounder and other local fish in the Delaware Bay, either by boat or on the pier at Cape Henlopen State Park.
The park also offers ocean swimming and camping, while the City of Lewes maintains a guarded beach on Delaware Bay that is particularly suited for young kids just learning to swim.
Another major attraction is the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, which transports passengers from Lewes to Cape May, N.J.
Accomodations range from beach houses to motels to camping at Cape Henlopen State Park.
Tips: When making plans for dining out, be sure to visit one of the restaurants along the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal that offer free cruises in the Delaware Bay after dinner for at least one of your meals.
