Former state finance director John C. Carney Jr. routed Dennis Rochford in the race for Lieutenant Governor on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000. Carney won 61.7 percent of the vote with 193,142 votes compared to Rochford's 119,786 votes for 38.3 percent. Rochford didn't help his cause with silly campaign ads questioning Carney's record on managing state finances that compared Carney to vice president Al Gore's claims of inventing the Internet. Carney, a 44-year-old Democrat from Wilmington, campaigned for lieutant governor with the hopes of being able to improve education by reducing class size and using education technology to link parents, students and teachers to help increase math and reading skills. He also said he would work to keep the economy strong, create good jobs, continue to lower taxes, ensure that all children in Delaware have health insurance, help Delaware senior citizens with prescription drugs and health care, and work to clean up the inland bays. Rochford, a 53-year-old Wilmington resident and president of the Maritime Exchange for the Delaware River and Bay Authority, said he sought the lieutenant governor's position to work on banning cigarettes from public schools and educating women about the importance of early diagnosis of breast cancer. |
