V. George CareyV. George Carey will be heading back to Dover for another term as the 36th District Representative.

Carey won 66.7 percent of the votes in a three-person race. Carey earned 4,134 votes to easily outdistance runnerup Douglas W. Ingram, who received 1,812 votes. John Stenger won 249 votes.

Carey, a 74-year-old Republican from Milford, has served in the state House since 1984. He said he would continue to monitor the education accountability system, would push for affordable health care for all Delawareans, would preserve open space while balancing the demands of business and growth, and would continue working to protect agriculture.

Carey said after the election that the state budget would present the biggest challenge in the upcoming session. "I definitely don't want to raise taxes," he said. The state's "rainy day fund" which is reported to be around $125 million, could come under scrutiny when the belt-tightening starts, Carey said. "But before that, we'll see what else we can do," he said.

Ingram, the 45-year-old Democratic Party nominee from Lincoln, had not held office before. He pledged to fight for citizens' rights, cut growh in government, establish a state sports lottery, and work for clean waterways.

Stenger, a 75-year-old retired teacher and professor, said he would work for term limits, support Sheriff Robert Reed's efforts for full law enforcement authority for his department, ease traffic congestion with dual east-west roads and overpasses, increase teacher salaries, provide health insurance from birth to grave for all citizens, and equalize funding for all school districts. He was making his first run for public office.
