Challenger Joseph W. Booth Jr. has unseated long-time incumbent John R. Schroeder for the 37th Representative District by the slimmest of margins.

Joseph W. BoothAccording to unofficial results from the Delaware Department of Elections, with all 8 voting districts in the 37th reporting, Booth defeated Schroeder by just 44 votes, 3,269 to 3,225.

That gave Booth a margin of 50.3 percent for 49.7 percent in what appears to be the closest election in Sussex County this year.

"I'm worn out but elated," said Booth. "Overall, it's been a cordial race. It's going to be interesting. There will be a lot of new faces with redistricting."

Booth said that although the Republicans will continue to control the House, "We'll stick together like we have to down here" regardless of party affiliation.

Booth, a member of the Indian River Board of Education and the former mayor of Georgetown, had not run for state office before.

The 44-year-old Republican from Georgetown campaigned on a platform of better education, enhanced law enforcement, initiatives to strengthen agri-businss and open space, and improved communication between government and the people.

Schroeder, a 51-year-old Democrat from Lewes, has served in the state Senate since 1988. He said he would continue to push for the preservation of the environment and open space.
