in 19th Republican Race |
Republican Primary Esthelda R.P. Selby of Milton defeated Matthew A. Opaliski of Greenwood to win the Republican nomination for the 19th Senatorial District on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002. Both political newcomers, Selby recorded 469 votes to Opaliski's 411 votes to earn the right to face long-time incumbent Thurman Adams Jr., a Bridgeville Democrat. Selby won with 53.3 percent of the vote, while Opaliski posted 46.7 percent. The tight race was reflected in the fact that Opaliski won six districts and tied Selby in two others. "I'm elated," said Selby. "I thank God and all my committee members and my mother, who's been by my side the whole time." Selby said the results show that "the voters are focusing on education." Selby would like to have seen a higher voter turnout on Saturday and that she plans to assemble a team to get out and register people to vote. "I'm concerned that more people didn't get out to vote," said Selby. "We can't let patriotism go down the drain. Every vote does count." Selby is entering politics for the first time after a long career in education in the Cape Henlopen School District. Opaliski, at 28 years of age, was the youngest entrant in this year's primaries. |
