Incumbent Vance Phillips easily defeated Willie M. Taylor in the Republican Primary for the Sussex County Council 5th Councilmanic District on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002.

Competing in a changed district this time with the redrawing of the 5th Councilmanic District to include the coastal Sussex communities of Fenwick Island and South Bethany, Phillips won with 77.7 percent of the vote.

He posted 756 votes to Taylor's 217 and won every district.

"In 1998, I ran on a pledge," said Phillips Saturday night. "This time, I ran on a record and I am pleased that the voters appreciated the direction I am promoting."

Phillips will now face Fenwick Island Mayor Peggy J. Baunchalk, the Democratic Party's nominee, in the Nov. 5 general election.
