From YourSITE.com Sports First Round State Tournament The Indians took the heavily favored Colonials to the limit before succumbing in a first round loss in the 2003 Delaware Field Hockey Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 5. After a goal by No. 4 William Penn, the Indians, seeded 13th, tied the game 1-1 on a goal by Leigh Ann Ambrose on an assist from Kati White at the 17:48 mark of the first half. The Colonials came back two minutes later, however, with the game-winning goal. The teams tied 8-8 in shots, but the Indians prevented William Penn from getting any shots in the second half. William Penn led 10-6 in penalty corners. Indian River goalie Kathryn Riley recorded 5 saves. IR finished its season with a 10-6-1 record, while William Penn improved to 15-1-1 and advanced to Saturday's quarterfinals against No. 5 Caesar Rodney. Seaford 2, Indian River 1 The Indians suffered a Henlopen Conference loss on Thursday, Oct. 23, that could have implications in their seeding in the upcoming state tournament. Indian River took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Ali Ambrose but despite dominating the game, couldn't get another goal past Seaford goalie Claire Rekitzke. The Indians out-shot Seaford 19-5 and led 15-6 in penalty corners. The loss dropped IR to 6-6 in the conference and 9-6-1 overall. Indian River 4, Caravel 3 The Indians knocked off heralded Caravel in a nonconference game to bolster their state tournament hopes. In handing Caravel its first loss of the season, the Indians scored the game-winner early in the second half on a goal by Jessica Spencer off an assist by Ali Ambrose. Spencer's goal gave the Indians a 4-1 lead, and they held on from there. Indian River's other goals came from Ambrose, Leigh Ann Ambrose, and Holly Miskin. Kari White and Miskin added assists, while goalie Kathry Riley made 4 saves. The Indians outshot Caravel 11-9. The teams tied 11-11 in penalty corners. Indian River 7, Woodbridge 0 The Indians scored an easy Henlopen Conference victory on Friday, Oct. 17, to remain in the hunt for a state tournament berth. Behind two goals apiece from Jessica Spencer and Ali Ambrose, IR exploded for a 4-0 halftime lead before finishing Woodbridge off in the second half. Besides Spencer and Ambrose, also scoring for Indian River were Leigh Ann Ambrose, Holly Miskin and Brenda Morin. Leigh Ann Ambrose added two assists. Indian River outshot Woodbridge 33-1 and led 19-1 in penalty corners. IR goalie Kathryn Riley picked up the shutout with 1 save. Caesar Rodney 2, Indian River 1 (OT) The Indians took the unbeaten Riders to the limit before suffering a heart-breaking Henlopen Conference defeat on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Indian River led the Riders 1-0 into the second half, but CR tied the game with 8 minutes left in regulation and won it with just two minutes left in overtime. The Indians took their lead when Leigh Ann Ambrose scored off a pass from Holly Miskin midway through the first half. Goalie Kathryn Riley stood tall for the Indians with 11 saves. The Indians have taken the conference's two unbeaten teams -- Lake Forest and now CR -- into overtime before falling this season. Indian River 5, Sussex Tech 0 The Indians had little trouble dispatching the Ravens in a Turf Bowl game at the University of Delaware on Saturday, Oct. 11. Indian River put five different goal scorers on the board. Leigh Ann Ambrose and Jessica Spencer stakes IR to a 2-0 halftime lead before Brenda Morin, Holly Miskin and put Sussex Tech away with second-half goals. Indian River led 13-5 in shots and 8-5 in penalty corners, while goalie Kathryn Riley recorded the shutout with 4 saves. Indian River 5, Sussex Central 1 The Ambrose sisters sparked the Henlopen Conference rout of the Indians' district rivals on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Ali Ambrose posted a hat trick while sister Leigh Ann Ambrose added the other two goals. Ali also registered an assist. The Indians outshot Sussex Central 21-2 and led 9-3 in penalty corners. Lake Forest 3, Indian River 2 (OT) The Indians nearly upset undefeated Lake Forest in a Henlopen Conference thriller on Thursday, Oct. 2. IR battled Lake to a 2-2 tie at halftime thanks to a pair of goals by Ali Ambrose. Ambrose scored her first goal 10 minutes into the game off an assist from Leigh Ann Ambrose to tie the match 1-1. She added her second goal off an assist from Holly Miskin with 33 seconds left in the half to send the game tied into intermission. After a scoreless second half, Lake Forest, which outshot IR 20-10, connected on the game-winner 3:32 into the overtime period. The Indians fell to 2-3-1 in the conference and overall, while Lake Forest improved to 6-0 in the conference and 7-0 overall. Indian River 3, Tatnall 3 The Indians came from behind to pull out a nonconference tie on Thursday, Sept. 25. Jessica Spenser scored all of the Indians' goals after they fell behind 3-0. Spenser connected on IR's first goal with just 10 seconds left in the first half. She then scored at the 18:04 and 5:29 marks of the second half to forge the tie. The Indians outshot Tatnall 18-12 and held a 15-13 advantage in penalty corners. Cape Henlopen 3, Indian River 1 The Indians fell behind 3-0 before scoring their goal in the second half in a Henlopen Conference loss on Tuesday, Sept. 16. Leigh Ann Ambrose notched IR's goal at the 3:04 mark. Goalie Kathryn Riley recorded 6 saves for the Indians, who were outshot 13-10 by Cape Henlopen. IR trailed 11-6 in penalty corners. The Indians are now 1-2 in the conference and overall. Indian River 4, Delmar 2 The Indians collected their first win of the season and the first win for new head coach Pativa McKean with the Henlopen Conference victory. Sparked by Leigh Ann Ambrose's two goals and an assist and Brenda Morin's two goals, the Indians controlled the action against Delmar, which reached the state finals last year. Milford 3, Indian River 1 The Indians held the advantage in shots but wound up on the short end of the score in a season-opening Henlopen Conference loss on Tuesday, Sept. 9. Indian River led Milford 17-15 in shots but could only manage a single goal by Ali Ambrose in new head coach Pativa McKean's debut.
