With the elections approaching soon, the July council meeting will be the last meeting of the current Council members. One outstanding issue needs to be resolved before the Town can claim "happy days are here again".
What is the status of Chief Dickerson's appeal or lawsuit? (See my June 25 posting under new police chief.) An eerie similar situation is occuring with the De. state police. A De. state PD sgt. successfully sued his employers for violation of his 1st amendment rights and was granted his job back. State PD responded that giving his job back would be "unfair to the person who currently holds it" (News Journal 7/16).
This is still a very serious outstanding issue.
If not settled by election, the new Council should become involved in this lawsuit and try to reach a solution. The current Council has been dealing with it since Feb.with no result.
All candidates should be aware of this situation and plan to act accordingly.
The new Council is who WE the public vote into office. Come the Sept. council meeting, this 'new' Council is in charge. It is now this 'new' council's responsibility to answer to the public about this issue, not the current council.
Remember that the Town is a Council form of government. After the elections, the 'new' Council represents its' citizens, not the old.
Hopefully this situation will be resolved by then so that the FIPD can start to return to normalcy.

Has the "Gang of Six" released any accurate information about how many sworn officers are actually on the FIPD and how many shifts are actually covered in the course of a typical week?
