Manager at SAAS GEORGETOWN -- Howard Gerken has been named project manager for the Sussex Academy of Arts and Sciences scheduled to become a charter school in Georgetown in September 2000, according to the SAAS board of directors. A Dagsboro resident, Gerken brings 31 years of public school administration and teaching experience to the school that is expected to enroll 225 middle school students in its first year. He has served as principal at Selbyville Middle School since 1983. Before that, he was principal at Sussex Central High School from 1978-82 and assistant principal there from 1975-78. Gerken began his teaching and coaching career at Oak Grove Junior High in Elsmere in 1968. He taught and coached at Christina High School in Newark from 1970-75. Gerken has a master's degree in secondary education from the University of Delaware and an undergraduate degree in Physics from Gettysburg (Pa.) College. SAAS plans to prepare middle school students for the new millenium by providing excellence in education within a small school environment. The school can be reached at 302-645-6640. |
