at Reading 2000 Day Delaware Gov. Thomas R. Carper will be a featured speaker at the Indian River School District's Reading 2000 in-service program on Sept. 1, 1999, at Selbyville Middle School. Gov. Carper will speak in the auditorium from 2 p.m.-2:35 p.m. and will discuss the importance of reading as part of recent education reforms mandated by the state legislature. More than 750 district employees, including every teacher from kindergarten through 12th grade, will participate in the day-long program. Reading 2000 is the launch pad for the district's goal of improving the reading skills of all students during the 1999-2000 school year. Throughout the day, teachers and other staffers will attend workshops outlining techniques for enhancing the reading abilities of students and improving test scores. Also scheduled to speak are Dr. Jack Pikulski, past president of the International Rreading Association and senior author of Houghton Mifflin's "Invitations to Literature", and Dr. Susan Mandel Glazer, a distinguished author and director of the Center for Reading and Writing at Rider University.
