at Selbyville Middle Ivan Neal has been named the new principal of Selbyville Middle School, according to Indian River School District officials. Neal replaces Howard Gerkin, who retired in June. Neal is the first African-American principal at one of the district's regular schools in its 30-year history. "It's certainly an honor," said Neal, who served as the middle school's assistant principal last year. "I certainly want to do the best I can to continue the very strong program in place at the school." The only other African-American principal in district history was James Evans, who held the position at the Howard T. Ennis special school from 1972-84. Neal is a 1978 graduate of Sussex Central High School in Georgetown and a 1983 University of Delaware graduate. He was hired by the district in 1983 as a resource teacher at Phillip C. Showell Elementary School in Selbyville. The following year he became a fourth grade teacher at Frankford Elementary School and held that position for 13 years. In October 1997, Neal was named assistant principal at Frankford Elementary before becoming assistant principal at Selbyville Middle in September 1998. A.J. Lathbury will replace Neal as Selbyville Middle School's assistant principal. Education News Index | Schools Index | News Index |
