Exercise Like the Eskimos, Jan. 1, 2002, Bethany Beach, Delaware

The nearly 100 'Eskimos' who braved the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean off Bethany Beach on New Year's Day emerged in hot pursuit of warm towels and hot drinks for their shivering bodies.

Exercise Like the Eskimos, Jan. 1, 2002, Bethany Beach, DelawareThe popular Exercise Like the Eskimos event, sponsored by the Bethany-Fenwick Chamber of Commerce, annually draws around 100 participants and hundreds more spectators to the main beach in Bethany, and this year's celebration on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, was no different.

Perhaps proving that Cabin Fever is a legitimate malady, they arrive in parkas, coats, caps and gloves, only to disrobe at high noon and run headlong for the frigid ocean.

Most ran in and ran out, but a few dove in head-first, and some stayed in for several minutes, leading those on the beach to wonder if they were just having fun or had lost control of their faculties.

The swim benefits a scholarship fund for Bethany and Fenwick area students.

New this year was a Hometown Pet Show that drew 70 contestants in four categories. That contest benefits the Sussex County SPCA and the Bethany Town Cats organizations.

    DelDOT Looking for Signs ...

The Delaware Department of Transportation has decided to clean up roadsides in Delaware with a crackdown on illegal roadside ad signs.

DelDOT will focus on signs such as those for new developments or work-at-home or health insurance that seem to crop up like bad weeds in state rights-of-way, including median strips, islands and major highways and roads.

To report an illegal sign, call 1-800-652-5600.

    M.L.K. Celebrations ...

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Organization will hold a couple of events to honor the birthday of the slain civil rights leader.

The organization's 9th annual parade will be held in Lewes on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at 11 a.m. The parade will feature local school bands, fire companies, politicians and university groups.

Later that day, a banquet will be held in the Bay Center in Dewey Beach featuring keynote speaker Dr. Bertrice Berry, a sociologist, author and former talk show host. Dr. Berry will speak about putting differences aside.

The organization will also hold a worship service at 10 a.m. on Martin Luther King Day on Jan. 21, 2002, at St. John Second Baptist Church in Millsboro.
