ON THE 'NET -- Sussex County Council may not be willing to make its weekly meetings accessible to more people by meeting at night, but it has provided more access now by transmitting its meetings live over the Internet. By visiting the county's online meeting page, you can call up audio and video using Windows' MediaPlayer. If you're one of the majority of web surfers who have RealPlayer instead, you can still view the meetings by downloading the Windows' MediaPlayer. The county's July 24 Internet broadcast went off with only a couple of minor, isolated problems with sound quality. Those problems were related more to speakers not speaking directly into their microphones than to technical problems. The online meeting page gives you the option to listen to the audio from the meeting and view a web cam of both the council members and speakers. Using the cam, a series of pictures taken throughout the meeting, anyone who has attended many council meetings could have easily recognized audience members and speakers. The county budgeted approximately $15,000 for the service this year. Based on our first look at the system during Tuesday's meeting, it's money well-spent and a service that county residents who can't attend daytime meetings should take advantage of. At the same time, those who wish to be heard will still need to attend council's meetings in Georgetown ... at least until county webmasters develop a conferencing system or take comments via e-mail a la CNN's Talk Back Live. :-) Local News Index | News Index |
