The Greater Millsboro Chamber of Commerce will move to a new office on Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999. the new office will be on the ground floor at 317 Main St. in Millsboro next to the police station and across the street from Candlelight Bridal. Parking is in the rear and the entrance is on Main Street. Phone numbers and mailing address remain the same. President Clayton Robinson says the chamber's long-term goal is to have a staffed office with street visibility downtown for the 225-member organization. "Our new headquarters will enable us to become an even stronger presence, as we begin the new millenium," Robinson said.
The route for Delmar's annual Christmas Parade has been altered due to the wastewater construction on State Street. The parade, scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at 2 p.m., will now begin on North Pennsylvania Avenue, turn right on State Street, left on to Bi-State Boulevard, right on to Lincoln Avenue, and then end at the high school. The Judges Stand will & MC will be located at Johnson's OK Used Cars & Exhaust Center facing Bi-State Boulevard. Trophies will be awarded in numerous categories. Participants will line up at noon. This year's parade theme is "Delmar in the 20th Century". The parade, as always, will feature an appearance by Santa Claus.
The community of Laurel suffered a tremendous loss Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, when long-time police chief James A. Harris died at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital of an apparent heart attack. Chief Harris was 60 years old. Harris had been with the Laurel Police Department for 31 years and had just announced his plans to retire next year. A viewing will be Sunday, Dec. 5, from 7-9 p.m. at the Short Funeral Home at 700 West St. in Laurel and at the Laurel Fire Hall on Monday, Dec. 6, at noon. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the fire hall. Burial will be in St. Matthew's First Baptist Church Cemetery in Laurel. Chief Harris said he was retiring due to job stress. He was scheduled to assume a new position within the department and assist the town's personnel committee in a search for a new chief before his retirement on Dec. 22, 2000. Chief Harris was preceded in death by his wife, Betty. He is survived by two sons, James A. Harris Jr. of Salisbury, Md., and Cedric "Donnie" Harris of Laurel; two brothers, the Rev. Robert L. Harris of Salisbury and Raymond P. Harris of Texas; a sister, Shirley a Harris of North Carolina; a long-time companion, Cleo C. Blake of Bridgeville, and her four children and six grandchildren. Chief Harris was born in Columbia to the late Victor and Olivia Harris. He was a member of the Hope Masonic Lodge No. 4 in Laurel. Among his main accomplishments with the Laurel Police Department were the McGruff and Officer Phil anti-drug and school safety programs. He also was involved in local, state and federal programs and organizations.
