Groundbreaking for a $10 million exansion of the Atlantic Sands Hotel in Rehoboth Beach, which will include a 12,000 square foot conference center capable of accomodating meetings and banquets for 10 to 500 people, will be Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at 9:30 a.m. The center will include a ballroom and 8 breakout rooms. The hotel will also add 78 deluxe one-bedroom suites. "This new expansion will allow us to compete for national, state and regional group business," said Katie Doherty, the hotel's general manager. "It will bring new dollars to Delaware and the local economy. We will now be able to secure business during our shoulder seasons which would normally go to nearby states."
The community of Laurel suffered a tremendous loss Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, when long-time police chief James A. Harris died at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital of an apparent heart attack. Chief Harris was 60 years old. Harris had been with the Laurel Police Department for 31 years and had just announced his plans to retire next year. A viewing will be at the Laurel Fire Hall on Monday, Dec. 6, at noon. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the fire hall. Burial will be in St. Matthew's First Baptist Church Cemetery in Laurel. Chief Harris said he was retiring due to job stress. He was scheduled to assume a new position within the department and assist the town's personnel committee in a search for a new chief before his retirement on Dec. 22, 2000. Chief Harris was preceded in death by his wife, Betty. He is survived by two sons, James A. Harris Jr. of Salisbury, Md., and Cedric "Donnie" Harris of Laurel; two brothers, the Rev. Robert L. Harris of Salisbury and Raymond P. Harris of Texas; a sister, Shirley a Harris of North Carolina; a long-time companion, Cleo C. Blake of Bridgeville, and her four children and six grandchildren. Chief Harris was born in Columbia to the late Victor and Olivia Harris. He was a member of the Hope Masonic Lodge No. 4 in Laurel. Among his main accomplishments with the Laurel Police Department were the McGruff and Officer Phil anti-drug and school safety programs. He also was involved in local, state and federal programs and organizations.
