Visiting Sussex NOTE: Sussex Beat is a mix of news, analysis and commentary by Eric Magill, publisher of Sussex County Online.
The center of the political universe will revolve around good ol' Sussex County on Thursday and Friday when Republican Presidential candidates George W. Bush and Steve Forbes make campaign appearances before the Delaware Caucuses on Feb. 8. Bush will meet Sussex County Republicans at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at the BayCenter at Ruddertowne in Dewey Beach. Tickets are $35 per person and are available by calling 302-856-7161. Seating is limited to 500. Forbes, meanwhile, will visit Sussex Republicans for breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb.4. Admission to Forbes' appearance is free as his campaign is paying for the fete. Bush will speak briefly to an expected audience of 500 during the dinner at the BayCenter and then greet Sussex Republicans. Bush has already visited Delaware once this year, stopping in for a Delaware Chamber of Commerce dinner in January. He will fly to South Carolina after the dinner to campaign for the nation's next major primary. After his appearance in Dewey, Forbes will board a bus for a cross-county tour and then head up to Dover for lunch. He will then spend the afternoon in New Castle County before returning to Dover for the Lincoln Day Dinner there. Bruce A. Rogers, committee chairman of the Sussex County Republicans, said no other candidates have committed to campaigning in Delaware for the caucuses here.
