Governor's Volunteer Awards ...

A number of Sussex County residents and businesses have been recognized for their volunteer efforts in the 2000 Governor's Outstanding Volunteer Awards.

Individuals who will be recognized by Delaware Gov. Thomas R. Carper on Wednesday, April 12, 2000, are May Truitt and Doris Betts, Rebekah LeGates, Francis O. "Mac" McPherson, and Sister Rosa Alvarez.

Truitt and Betts, friends who have volunteered together for more than 20 years, were cited for their work as volunteer ombudsmen for the elderly and disabled in long-term care facilities.

LeGates provides individual tutoring to students as a classroom and school assistant at Georgetown Elementary School. McPherson received a posthumous honor for his service to litigants and staff at Sussex County Family Court as a volunteer security officer and receptionist.

Alvarez is a Carmelite Nun providing prenatal and postnatal care to Hispanic women in Sussex County through La Esperanza Community Center, which she helped found. She has also founded two bi-lingual child care centers.

Sussex agencies and organizations to be honored are Meals on Wheels of Rehoboth and Lewes Inc. and the South Coastal Chapter #5226 AARP Inc.

Meals on Wheels delivers two hot meals daily to homebound residents and provides essential social contact. Volunteers also report on changes in health and living conditions of recipients.

The South Coastal AARP is involved in a variety of programs and events benefitting senior citizens, including Sussex County Senior Services/CHEER Cheermobile Mini Market, Phone Friends, Medical Transportation Drivers, Home Repair Oversight Committee, Beach Day Governor's Walk for Meals on Wheels, the Holiday Gift-Wrap Fundraiser, and delivering groceries to homebound seniors and disabled adults.

Businesses to be honored are the Greenwood Trust Company and Mountaire Farms and Dagsboro Church of God.

Greenwood Trust supports as many as 30 organizations and related initiatives including Junior Achievement, Adopt-A-School with Richardson Park Elementary School, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, the Basket Brigade, Meals on Wheels, the VA Hospital, and Read Aloud Delaware.

Mountaire Farms of Selbyville and the Dagsboro Church of God have developed an annual collaboration with more than 70 area businesses and 9 churches to provide more than 11,000 complete dinners to low income families in the area.
