Miss Delaware 1999, Kama BolandSix young women from Sussex County will be among the 18 contestants in the annual Miss Delaware Pageant at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center on Friday, June 9, 2000, and Saturday, June 10.

The contestants are vying to replace Kama Boland, the 1999 winner. This year's winner will represent Delaware in the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City on Oct. 14, 2000.

Tickets range from $15-$25 each night. The pageant begins at 7:30 p.m. both nights.

  • Marisa Ann Erdman, Miss Sussex County, is a 19-year-old University of Delaware student from Millsboro. Her talent is Dramatic Monologue and her theme is Assisting Homelss Children.

  • Melissa Escaro, Miss Milford, is a 21-year-old University of Delaware student from Seaford. Her talent is Vocal and her platform is Understanding and Overcoming Eating Disorders.

  • Jolene Cross, Miss Rehoboth Beach, is a 20-year-old student at DelTech from Laurel. Her talent is Guitar/Vocal and her platform is Nurturing Citizen Services: Become a Volunteer.

  • Shannan Davis, Miss Millsboro, is a 19-year-old student at DelTech from Millsboro. Her talent is Dance and her platform is Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness.

  • Elise Eckerd, Miss Eastern Shore, is a 20-year-old student at Immaculata College (Pa.) from Dagsboro. Her talent is Vocal and her platform is Providing a Better Life for Senior Citizens.

  • Nicole Rebecca Hoffman, Miss Cape Henlopen, is an 18-year-old student at Southern Virginia College from Georgetown. Her talent is Vocal and her platform is Hand in Hand, Believing in Achieving.

Balloon Festival ...

Balloons will fill the skies of Milton this weekend for the 11th annual Delmarva Hot Air Ballon & Crafts Festival.

Expected to draw 18,000 people, the event benefits the American Diabetes Association and helps send local children with diabetes and their families to awareness camps.

Hours are noon-9 p.m. today, June 9, 2000, and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday, June 10. Cost is $3 per car.

The highlight of the event is the 80-foot hot air balloons. Weather permitting, the best time to watch them is at 5:30 a.m. for the morning flight or 5:30 p.m. for the evening landing.

The Balloon Glow, the lighting of the balloons, will be at 8:30 p.m. each night. Tethered balloon rides will be available for purchase.

More than 150 craft, art and antiques dealers and 20 food vendors will be on the festival grounds, which will be centered at the Milton Family Practice at 424 Mulberry St.

Entertainment includes First State Force, a band of police officers from throughout the state, at 6 p.m. tonight, and country singer Randy Lee Ashcraft and the Salt Water Cowboys starting at 7 p.m. Saturday.

A benefit auction of antiques, crafts, artwork, and gift certificates will be held from 4-6 p.m. tonight.

The Milton Volunteer Fire Dept. will also hold a 3-day carnival in conjunction with the festival for children.
