Flounder Fishery
Re-Opened on May 5
Summer Flounder ...

Limits Changed to
17.5 Inches, Four Fish

After a closure of more than three weeks, Delaware's recreational summer flounder season was reopened by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control on Saturday, May 5, 2001.

Under an emergency order by DNREC Secretary Nicholas A. DiPasquale, the season was reopened effective at 12:01 a.m. on May 5. Emergency orders are effective for 120 days.

The size and creel limits were also changed under the order, with the new minimum size 17.5 inches and new creel limit four fish per day. There will be no daily closures.

The limits before the April 12 closure were 17 inches and 5 fish per day with closures on Mondays and Tuesdays.

DNREC's Division of Fish and Wildlife held a public hearing on May 1, 2001, to discuss four options for the 2001 flounder season. More than 125 fishermen attended, with the majority favoring the 17.5-inch and 4-fish option with a year-round season.

The closure and the new measures were enacted to bring Delaware into compliance with a court victory won by environmentalists claiming the recreational summer flounder catch far exceeded established quotas.

The Division of Fish and Wildlife will need to adopt a regulation for the 2001 season to extend the season beyond the 120-day limit allowed under the emergency order.
