Sussex Tech Board
Should be Elected

Delaware Representative Biff Lee

Dear Editor,

Last October, Sussex Tech Superintendent George Frunzi resigned his position after questions arose about his management of district funds.

As is standard practice, the school board appointed an interim superintendent while they conducted a search for a permanent replacement. Assistant Superintendent Carol Schreffler was chosen to assume the interim role and was also to be considered as a candidate to get the job permanently.

The board reportedly narrowed its search to two candidates: an undisclosed person who was their first choice and Ms. Schreffler. However, when their first choice declined the job offer, the board spurned Ms. Schreffler without comment.

Making this action all the more unusual is the fact that Ms. Schreffler has a broad base of support among the district's parents, teachers and support staff. Their questions to the board as to why Ms. Schreffler -- a 24-year Sussex Tech veteran -- was not selected for the position, have gone unanswered.

While I personally feel Ms. Schreffler would make a very good superintendent of Sussex Tech, it is not my intent to champion her selection.

As a public official, I can appreciate the delicacy of discussing personnel decisions in a public setting. Even so, I am disturbed by the board's failure to work with the public and its seeming lack of accountability to the people it is supposed to represent.

Unlike the boards that oversee the operations of our other public schools, vo-tech school board members are appointed by the governor. I am at a loss to understand why vo-techs should be treated any differently than traditional schools. That's why I intend to introduce a bill to change this.

My legislation would end the practice of appointing people to oversee the operation of our vocational education system. Instead, it would allow the people that pay for these schools to select who is in charge of looking after their investment.

Sincerely,
State Rep. Biff Lee
