on Fenwick Council |
Earn Other 3 Seats Incumbent Theo Brans was the top vote-getter in the election for Fenwick Island Town Council on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003. Brans will be the lone incumbent returning to the council after three other incumbents decided not to run this year. Also earning seats were newcomers Martha Keller and Audrey Serio, and Chris Clark, who served on council before resigning three years ago. Brans earned 355 of the 600 votes cast to easily outdistance the others. Keller came in second with 273 votes, while Clark came in third with 266. Serio just edged C. Mark Tingle for the final seat with 258 votes to Tingle's 255. Besides Tingle, the other challengers to finish out of the running were Carol Hughes with 246 votes, Ginny Borodulia with 240, and Nick Valiente with 199. The election ends a contentious year in the town under the leadership of long-time council president Peg Baunchalk, police commissioner Edward "Buzz" Henifin and treasurer Richard Griffin. The trio decided not to seek re-election this year after it was revealed the town had not performed required financial audits for four years, did not pay employee withholding taxes to the state for much of that period, was sued by former police chief George Dickerson, lost half of its police force, and learned it was the subject of a Department of Justice investigation into alleged misuse of federal grants. The council will now have three new faces to go with Brans and council members Vicki Carmean, Peter Frederick and Harry Haon. |
