Before flag-waving audience members adorned in red, white and blue, the hour-long program at Bethany's boardwalk bandstand featured musical performances, speeches, and Taps by the color guard of the Ocean View VFW. Quickly put together by Bethany Beach real estate agent Vicki York and former Bethany business owner Mary Szalasa, the cerermony brought some in the audience to tears during a 21-Gun Salute and Taps, and later during the singing of God Bless America. Onlookers spilled down the sides of the boardwalk and looked on from adjacent restaurants and motel balconies. Bethany Beach Mayor Joseph McHugh, Delaware State Representative Shirley Price, and Delaware Senator George H. Bunting Jr. spoke to the crowd and urged those in attendance to continue to come together. Rep. Price spoke of not being able to see the stars until it's darkest, and reflecting on the attacks and Americans' reactions to them, said, "I've seen a lot of stars this week." Performances included several numbers by a hastily composed band consisting of student musicians from Indian River High School, Selbyville Middle School and Lord Baltimore Elementary School. Several stirring songs were sung by former Miss Delaware Cassie Wells, local students Heather Hale and Candace Evans, and Bethany area resident Jennifer Carter. Dan Orendorf, president of the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Co., spoke of the sacrifices made by fire fighters, particularly the fire fighters called on in New York City this week.
