24 Hours, 7 Days GEORGETOWN -- Interested applicants can now apply for jobs with the State of Delaware on the Internet. State Personnel Director Harriet Smith Windsor and State Treasurer Jack Markell showcased the new online application system (http://www.state.de.us/spo) at Delaware Technical & Community College in Georgetown on Friday, Oct. 20, 2000. The system, called a fundamental component of Gov. Thomas R. Carper's e-government initiative, allows applicants to apply 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The online application system includes selected jobs now but will, over the next month, phase in nearly all statewide positions. Gov. Carper, who is in Missouri for the funeral of Gov. Mel Carnahan, said, "Technology is constantly changing the way we live and it is certainly changing the way people search and apply for new jobs." "Now, with the push of a button, applicants will be able to instantaneously apply for positions online," said Windsor. "This is part of state personnel's overall strategy to provide easier, more efficient service to Delaware citizens." Besides the online application, a variety of publications and information are available on the state personnel site, including weekly job postings, alphabetical class listing, benefits at a glance, application instructions, job register openings, merit rules for personnel administration, pay scales, the state employee pension plan, and adverse weather advisories. In March, Gov. Carper called on Markell to head Delaware's first e-government task force and charged it with identifying and implementing ways to enhance state services and provide better information through 21st Century technology. "Over the last several months, we have unveiled several exciting services that are now available on the Internet," said Markell. "I am pleased that the office of state personnel has made it possible to apply for state jobs online. I'm confident that many Delawareans will avail themselves of this teriffic new opportunity." A catalog of all state services now online is available at http://www.state.de.us/egov/. |
