Safety Tips

The American Red Cross has provided the following safety tips for Halloween trick-or-treaters:

  • Walk on sidewalks, not in the streets.
  • Look both ways before crossing the street.
  • Cross the street at crosswalks or corners.
  • Don't hide or cross the street behind parked cars.
  • Wear light-colored or reflective clothing to make yourself more visible. Put reflective tape on bikes and skateboards.
  • Plan a route and share it with family members. If possible, an adult should accompany children.
  • Carry a flashlight.
  • Keep away from open fires and candles. Costumes can be extremely flammable.
  • Visit homes with lit porch lights.
  • Accept treats at the door and never go into a stranger's house.
  • Use face paint rather than masks, which cover the eyes.
  • Be cautious of animals and strangers.
  • Have an adult inspect treats before eating them. Don't eat candy if the package is already opened. Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children.
