Sussex Could Get Two
New House Districts

Delaware House of Representatives ...

Measure Must be Passed
by Senate, Gov. Minner

The Delaware House of Representatives passed a redistricting proposal that would give Sussex County two more representative seats on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001.

House Bill 344, passed 32-9 by the House, would add new districts in the Georgetown and coastal Sussex areas, areas which saw large population gains from the 1990 to 2000 censuses.

The measure must also be passed by the state Senate and Gov. Ruth Ann Minner, but Senate leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Thurman G. Adams of Bridgeville, said neither the House plan nor a Senate plan have much chance of passing.

"Until the two chambers sit down and resolve our differences, the bill won't get done," said Adams.

Adams said the Senate will not convene a special session to vote on the plan.

The House plan would increase the number of representative seats in the state from 41 to 45 and give each district approximately 17,413 residents. The southern New Castle County and Bear areas would also get new districts.

Voting for the House plan Thursday were Rep. V. George Carey (R-Milford), Rep. Biff Lee (R-Laurel), Rep. Shirley Price (D-Millville), Rep. J. Benjamin Ewing (R-Bridgeville), Rep. Tina Fallon (R-Seaford), and Rep. John Schroeder (D-Lewes).

The only Sussex legislator voting against the measure was Rep. Charles West (D-Gumboro).
