WILMINGTON -- James A. Smith, a native Sussex Countian and graduate of Sussex Central High School, has been named Deputy Press Secretary for Delaware Governor Thomas R. Carper.

Smith, 31, joined the governor's staff this week to fill the spot vacated in August 1999 when Anthony Farina moved up from Deputy Press Secretary to replace departing Press Secretary Sheri Woodruff, who took a position with General Motors in Chicago.

Since 1993, Smith has been public information officer for the Delaware Electric Cooperative, where he managed media relations, community awareness programs, and governmental affairs.

Smith earned his Bachelor's Degree in English from the University of Delaware in 1991 and is currently working on a master's degree in Public Administration there.

He has also worked as a journalist for the Delaware State News, as editor of Southern Delaware Magazine, and as a broadcaster with WGMD FM-92.7 in Long Neck.

Smith lives in the Pike Creek area of New Castle County with his wife, Terri. His mother, Harriet Smith Windsor, is the state's director of personnel.
