Laurel Getting
Elderly Facility

From Rep. Castle's Office ...

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The town of Laurel will be the site for 21 one-bedroom independent living apartments for low-income elderly residents, Delaware Rep. Michael N. Castle (R-Del.) announced Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999.

Home of America Inc. will receive $1,813,800 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to build the facility.

The complex will be called Laurel Commons and will house the 21 apartments in three buildings. Each building will contain 7 cottage-style apartments in a U-shaped configuration with a community building centrally located in the complex.

The community room will contain a wellness/medical service room, library corner, computer access and a multi-purpose center. Homes for American expects to begin construction in mid-2000.

"As all of us know, the population of our nation is aging," said Rep. Castle, a member of the House Banking and Financial Services Committee that oversees HUD. "As this natural process occurs, there is an ever-increasing need for affordable housing for the elderly. This is especially true in areas like Sussex County."

Funding for the project falls under HUD's Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program Award. Section 202 is an assistance program that provided capital advance financing and rental assistance to private nonprofit sponsors for the development and operation of supportive housing for the elderly.

"It is so important we assist our low-income elderly by giving them the opportunity to live as independently as possible," said Rep. Castle. "This grant will enable more elderly Delawareans to maintain some independence, while still getting the help they need. It is a positive alternative to nursing homes and low quality housing."
