Census Confirms
Fast Sussex Growth

U.S. Census ...

County, State Growing
By Leaps and Bounds

The 2000 U.S. Census has confirmed what everyone who lives in Sussex County already knows -- that Sussex County is the fastest growing county in Delaware and one of the fastest growing counties in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Sussex County's population has grown to more than 141,000 residents according to the 2000 Census, an increase of more than 21,000 since the 1990 Census.

The jump represents a 14.9 percent population increase in the last 10 years.

The U.S. Bureau of Census estimates that Sussex County's growth will accelerate in the next 20 years, jumping 60 percent to 182,000 by 2020.

The county is currently issuing 2,000 building permits a year.

State-wide, Delaware's population has increased to 783,600 people from 666,168 in 1990.

The new figures make Delaware 8th in the country in population density with nearly 400 people per square mile. Amazingly, that puts Delaware just behind New York state with 401 people per square mile.
