Snow began falling in Sussex County as a much-anticipated major winter storm arrived overnight but with predictions for much less severe weather than originally forecast.

Snow on Sussex County StreetThe National Weather Service removed its Winter Storm Warning for the county and revised its forecast of Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, of 6 to 12 inches of snow to just a couple of inches.

The NWS continued its Gale Warning and Coastal Flooding Warning for the county but said there would be little additional accumulation of snow on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000. On Friday, the NWS said the brunt of the storm would hit Sussex County on Saturday.

The service also reduced the percentage of snow today from nearly 100 percent to 50 percent.

The major concern for Saturday will be wind chills, which, as winds increase to 15 to 25 miles per hour, are expected to drop to 10 degrees below 0.

What snow does fall will likely stick around, though, with temperatures forecast to only reach into the lower 30s through Tuesday before reaching the mid- to upper 30s Wednesday and Thursday.

Road crews planned to be out in force to try to reduce the snow's impact on such New Year's festivities as the annual Eskimo Swim in Bethany Beach.

DelDOT planned to have 300 snow plows and 300 workers laying salt and sand as soon as the first snowflakes begin to fall. The initial focus will be on main roads before moving to secondary roads.
