Taking Trees in Sussex

Cape Henlopen and Trap Pond state parks will be among the Delaware State Parks accepting Christmas trees for recycling this year.

Delawareans can take their Christmas trees to drop-off sites at the park to be recycled in a joint program between the state park system and the state's Division of Forestry.

For the first time in the program's eight-year history, participants will be able to make a donation to help offset the cost of recycling the trees.

Trees should be free of all lights, wire, tinsel, ornaments, nails, stands or other materials that are not part of the natural tree.

Christmas wreaths with wire frames and bindings and flocked trees can not be recycled and will not be accepted. Trees from commercial haulers will not be accepted, either.

Gary Focht, coordinator of the tree recycling program, said nearly 7,000 trees were diverted to New Castle County landfills last year.

The recycled trees save landfill space and provide an aromatic ground cover that reduces soil erosion and deters weed growth, Focth said. Mulch from the trees will be available for free for the public at Bellevue and Lums Pond State Parks beginning Feb. 4.

"We want to make people aware that once you have used organic material like a Christmas tree, it can be recycled instead of going into a landfill," Focht said.

Details on obtaining mulch and the recycling program are available from the Division of Parks and Recreation at 302-739-4702.
