Delawareans will be asked for their input in the design of a new bridge over the Indian River Inlet between Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach, according to Gov. Ruth Ann Minner.

According to a release on Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, the state has selected Figg Engineering Company, designers of the Del. 1 bridge over the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, to design the new inlet bridge, expected to be the state's next big transportation project.

The selection of the Tallahassee, Fla., firm was based in large part on its plan to provide a process for substantial community input into the design of the bridge, the release said.

The bridge, considered one of the most critical transportation projects for Sussex County and the entire state, has been targeted for replacement due to concerns about the existing structure's stability.

Severe tidal erosion has been eating away at the piers of the existing bridge, which carries Del. 1 over the Indian River Inlet where the inlet meets the Atlantic Ocean.

While DelDOT has performed preventative maintenance over the years and continues to monitor the bridge's condition, the state's engineers and outside experts have agreed that a new bridge is necessary.

"We want a bridge that adds both beauty and functionality for vehicle, bike and pedestrian traffic," said Minner. "And we want it to compliment the natural landscape and the recreational facilities enjoyed by our citizens and visitors."

Transportation Secretary Nathan Hayward III praised Figg for its presentation of innovative construction techniques, its devotion to quality, its attention to life-cycle costs, and most importantly, its understanding of the value of community involvement in a project of this size and significance.

Among the considerations for the new bridge are eliminating piers from the inlet and the possibility that the inlet could someday be widened.

A longer structure than the existing bridge, with no piers in the water, required a designer with innovative approaches and leading edge technology, Hayward said. The five-member selection panel felt unanimously that Figg brought the best technical, aesthetic, and practical experience to the project.

Figg included a conceptual rendering with its proposal to Delaware, but the actual design will be driven by the community participation process, Gov. Minner said. The final design could incorporate elements of Sussex County history and landscape, she said.

Community meetings will begine in February and a completed design should be ready for bids by early 2004, Hayward said. No cost has yet been estimated for the new bridge.
