Texas Gov. George W. Bush picked up a much-needed victory in the Delaware Republican Primary on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000.

Bush captured 50.7 percent of the vote to trounce rivals John McCain and Steve Forbes. McCain shunned Delaware for the Feb. 19 South Carolina primary but placed second with 25.3 percent.

Forbes, who won the 1996 primary here and campaigned throughout the state, finished third with 19.7 percent. He later announced that he was withdrawing from the race. Alan Keyes was fourth with 4 percent.

With the win, Bush captured all 12 of Delaware's delegates. He made six stops in Delaware including an appearance in Dewey Beach on Feb. 3.

Bush had lost the New Hampshire primary to McCain 49 percent to 31 percent. The battle shifts to South Carolina and its 37 delegates now.

Forbes said he will continue to campaign in Michigan and South Carolina and determine whether to continue the campaign after that.
