GEORGETOWN -- A new PVC fold and form sewer line technology for use in renovating the South Bethany sewer line was approved by the Sussex County Council during its Tuesday, February 8, 2000 meeting.

The technology is 30 percent cheaper than the traditional open road method and offers the same one-year warranty, according to Brad Hawke, the county's director of Utility Engineering.

South Bethany's 25-year-old sewer lines need repairs and after investigation, the county's engineering department narrowed the choices down to two technologies, Hawke said.

The engineering department recommended the PVC fold and form method over the traditional open road method because it doesn't take as long to install, is less expensive, and doesn't require tearing up the road like the open road method, which would have caused traffic delays in the resort area.

The PVC fold and form method is a liner for the sewer lines in which warmed PVC fold and form is threaded through the older lines and capped and filled, with air shaping the new lines to the older lines.

Hawke said he expects the project to be completed before Easter.

In other business, the council:

  • Approved Seaford's request to move forward with annexation.

  • Approved the county engineering department's request to advertise and petition for the expansion of the Fenwick Island Sanitary Sewer District.

  • Gave $105,394 to the University of Delaware Extension Service to continue teaching, researching and expanding the various programs uniquely tailored to the needs of Sussex County farmers.

  • Honored the Woodbridge High School varsity football team, from the smallest school district in the state, by proclaiming Tuesday, February 8, 2000, as Woodbridge Raiders Varsity Day. The team was undefeated during the 1999 regular season and won the Henlopen Conference Southern Division championship. Their coach, John H. Parker, was named Delaware High School Football Coach of the Year.

  • The second proclamation declared Thursday, February 10, 2000, as Sussex County March of Dimes 'Walk America' Kick-Off Day.
