Millsboro Police
Get Defibrillator

From Gov. Carper's Office ...

The Millsboro Police Department received an automatic external defibrillator from Delaware Gov. Thomas R. Carper on Wednesday, June 14, 2000.

Carper presented the AED to the Millsboro police, Delaware State Police, Capitol Police, Wilmington police, Dover police and Smyrna police as part of his initiative to enhance emergency medical services in the state.

The AEDs will be distributed to other police departments in the coming weeks.

Last year, emergency providers responded to more than 750 cardiac arrest calls. Since police are on the streets patrolling neighborhoods, officers are often the first to arrive on a scene.

With AEDs in the vehicles, Carper said, police can now administe the life-saving equipment on cardiac arrest patients. Police will be trained on the AEDs before putting them into service.

"Our goal is to create an EMS system which alows those involved to focus squarely on assisting people with greater efficiency and effectiveness," said Gov. Carper. "By equipping police departments with life-saving equipment, we're moving much closer to that goal and helping to save lives across Delaware."

Carper last year signed House Bill 332 (sponsored by Rep. Bruce Ennis, Sen. Margaret Rose Henry, and Sen. Patricia Blevins) to help strengthen Delaware's EMS system.

The measure was enacted after Carper convened a committee of EMS representatives when he learned that the EMS system was falling short of operating optimally. Among the committee's recommendations was equipping police vehicles with AEDs.
