Carper Nominates 4
from Sussex for
Education Board

From Gov. Carper's Office ...

DOVER -- Four Sussex Countians and a Sussex County teacher have been nominated to Delaware's first Education Professional Standards Board by Delaware Gov. Thomas R. Carper.

Carper nominated Milton Middle School teacher Joanne C. Reihm, Milford teacher Mary Kotz, Lord Baltimore Elementary School principal Dr. Jacquelyn Wilson, and Delaware PTA Vice President Sherie L. Hudson of Laurel to the board that is required by the state's new Educator Accountability law.

Carper also nominated Dover resident John J. Pallace, a teacher at Woodbridge High School.

The four Sussex Countians were nominated along with 11 other Delawareans for the 15-member board charged with proposing to the state's Board of Education rules and regulations for educators' pre-service training, licensure, certification, recruitment, evaluation, and professional development.

If approved by the Senate, the nominees would serve 2-, 3- or 4-year terms.

By law, the board must be comprised of 8 teachers, 3 administrators, 2 parents, 1 local school board member and 1 higher education representative.

"Because we know that teacher effectiveness is critical to student success, Delaware must make every effort to provide teachers the support and training they need to be successful, attract the best possible teachers to our classrooms, and hold them accountable -- along with schools and school districts -- for student performance," said Carper. "Our children deserve nothing less than the best preparation for life and work that we can provide."

Also nominated to the board are:

  • Charles T. Michels (Felton), teacher, Chipman Middle School
  • Michelle D. Porter (Newark), teacher, Talley Middle School
  • Patricia M. Clements (Hockessin), teacher, New Castle County Vo-Tech School District

  • Mary N. Mirabeau (Wilmington), parent, Delaware PTA vice president
  • Teresa L. Schooley (Newark), school board member, Christina School Board
