Sussex Central Graduate
Heads Carper Press Office

Sussex County native James A. Smith has been named press secretary to Delaware Gov. Thomas R. Carper, the governor announced on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000.

Smith, a graduate of Sussex Central High School, has been deputy press secretary since 1999. He replaces Anthony R. Farina, who leaves the post Aug. 31 to become Global Communications and Media Relations manager for the DuPont Company's Chemical Solutions Enterprise Business.

Smith, 32, earned his B.A. in English from the University of Delaware in 1991. He joined Gov. Carper's staff in 1999 after serving nearly seven years as public information officer for the Delaware Electric Cooperative, where he managed media relations, community awareness programs, and governmental affairs.

Before that, he wrote for several publications, served as editor of Southern Delaware magazine, and was a broadcaster for WGMD FM-92.7 in Rehoboth Beach.

Smith is currently working on a master's degree in public administration at the University of Delaware. He lives in the Pike Creek area of New Castle County with his wife, Terri.
