The annual Bethany Beach Jazz Festival drew the summer tourist season to a close in this popular seaside beach resort on Monday, Sept. 6, 1999. More than 1,000 people lined the Bethany Beach boardwalk to view the funeral, which traditionally marks the end of the season each Labor Day. This year, however, Hurricane/Tropical Storm Dennis ended the season a bit early as its beach-eating northeasterly winds and rough seas sent many vacationers packing before Labor Day.
