![]() Hurricane/Tropical Storm Dennis menaced the Delaware coast for nearly 10 days with high winds, rough surf, cloudy skies and intermittent power outages from August 29-September 7, 1999. The storm brought an early end to a booming summer season for the Delaware resorts as many vacationers packed their bags mid-week and headed home before Labor Day weekend, the usual closing date of the summer. Blowing northeasterly winds high tide after high tide, Dennis ravaged the beaches, eating away much of the sand that had been dumped on the Sussex coast during replenishment efforts a year earlier. Nevertheless, resort officials believe the beaches will be replenished within a couple of weeks if the weather remains relatively calm. |
