Boys' State Tourney ...

Sussex Tech, the last downstate hope for a boys' basketball state championship, succumbed to Howard 67-61 in the state tournament quarterfinals at Polytech on Tuesday, March 7, 2000.

In the second round, Tech survived a battle with St. Mark's on Saturday, March 4, 2000 to reach the quarterfinal round. In that 48-44 victory, Raven senior Brian Polk became only the fourth player in Delaware history to score 2,000 career points.

In other second round games involving Sussex teams, Cape Henlopen lost a heart-breaker to Friends, 45-44, and Laurel's season was ended by second-seeded A.I. DuPont, 84-61.

In other second round games, top-seeded and unbeaten Sanford defeated Brandywine 68-36, defending state champion and fourth-seeded William Penn whipped Lake Forest 59-30, St. Elizabeth eliminated Newark 73-63, Hodgson ousted Mt. Pleasant 89-72, and Howard beat Glasgow 82-80 in double overtime.

Following are the quarterfinal matchups for Tuesday, March 7 (sites and times TBA):

  • Sussex Tech (No. 3, 21-3) vs. Howard (No. 6, 18-6)
  • Sanford (No. 1, 23-0) vs. Friends (No. 8, 18-5)
  • William Penn (No. 4, 18-4) vs. St. Elizabeth (No. 5, 18-5)
  • A.I. DuPont (No. 2, 23-1) vs. Hodgson (No. 7, 18-5)
First Round

Laurel and Cape Henlopen advanced to the second round of the Delaware state high school boys' basketball tournament with first round victories on Thursday, March 2, 2000, while Delmar was eliminated.

Laurel outlasted Sussex Central, 86-76, in double overtime to move on to a second round game against second-seeded A.I. DuPont on Saturday, March 4, at 8 p.m. at Glasgow.

Cape, meanwhile, topped Concord 63-53 to advance to a second round contest against Wilmington Friends at 4 p.m. at Polytech on March 4.

Delmar's season was ended by Mt. Pleasant, 64-57.

In other first round action, St. Mark's defeated Caesar Rodney 45-34, Lake Forest beat Archmere 59-44, Brandywine topped Dickinson 64-60 in double overtime, Glasgow beat St. Andrew's 56-51, and Newark edged Christiana 54-51.
