Indian River 35, Seaford 17 The Indians, behind Billy Hall's 158 yards rushing and two touchdowns, rolled past the Blue Jays in the Henlopen South game. Hall scored his touchdowns in the first half on runs of 68 and 67 yards as the Indians built a 21-0 lead. Deondre Matthews scored on a 27-yard run, Brock Dean caught a 39-yard pass from quarterback Joey Land, and Buster Belote ran in from 29 yards out for the Indians' other touchdowns. IR is now 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the division. Indian River 40, Polytech 7
The Indians continued their Jekyll and Hyde season with the Homecoming rout of the Panthers. In rising to 3-4 overall, Indian River scored on its first three possessions on a 12-yard touchdown run by fullback John Meiklejohn, a 15-yard run by quarterback Joey Land, and a 17-yard dash by running back Billy Hall. Luis Perez scooped up a fumble forced by Deondre Matthews and ran it in from 30 yards for the Indians' next touchdown. Buster Belote scored from 7 yards out and Matthews ran the ball in from 10 yards to account for IR's last two touchdowns. The Indians surprised the perennial Henlopen South power behind running back Billy Hall and wide receiver Torrez Spence in their division opener. Hall returned a kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown and scored on a 23-yard touchdown run to propel the Indians to a 2-2 overall record and into an early showdown at Delmar at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000. Hall rushed for 98 yards on only 5 attempts. His kickoff return in the second quarter put the Indians up 14-6. A 56-yard pass on a fake punt from punter John Meiklejohn to Spence made the score 24-6 in the third period. Spence finished with 128 yards receiving on 5 catches. The Indians converted their first three two-point conversions, too, on a run by Hall, a run by quarterback Joey Land, and a pass from Land to Spence. Keshawn Gibbs' 74-yard kickoff return for a touchdown put the Indians up 15-13 at halftime and they rolled to their first win of the season with 13 unanswered points in the second half. John Meiklejohn scored touchdowns, one from 6 yards out and one on a 4-yard run. Buster Belote scored the other touchdown on a 36-yard pass from quarterback Joey Land. The Indians couldn't keep up with the state's third-ranked team in head coach Jim Bunting's debut after a 20-year absence from the varsity helm. Facing their district rivals, the Indians scored on a 1-yard run by quarterback Joey Land following a fumble recovery at the Knight 1 and a 25-yard run by Keshawn Gibbs. |
