Delmar 27, Smyrna 0
The Delmar High School football team dispatched another Henlopen Conference Southern Division opponent to set up a showdown with rival Laurel next week. The Wildcats, at 4-0 and in first place in the Henlopen South, visit second-place Laurel on Friday, Nov. 9, in a game that will go a long way to determining the division champion. Now 8-0 overall, the Wildcats overcame four turnovers against Smyrna behind running back Sean Hudson's 223 yards and four touchdowns rushing on just 15 carries. Hudson overshadowed all-state Smyrna running back Mike Pennewell, who gained 99 yards, with touchdown runs of 25, 3, 25 and 61 yards -- scoring a touchdown apiece in each quarter.
In recording its fourth shutout of the season, the Wildcat defense tackled Pennewell 8 times for losses, registered four sacks, and didn't allow Smyrna past the Wildcat 17. Laurel is 3-1 in the Henlopen South and 4-4 overall after beating Lake Forest 14-13 on Nov. 2. The Bulldogs lost to Smyrna 18-13 earlier this season. Delmar Index | Sports Index |
