State Soccer Berth New Delmar High School boys' soccer coach Rick Evans hasn't set a simple goal for his team in his first year. Coming off a 7-5 season in 2000, Evans expects the Wildcats to take that next step to the next level and qualify for the state tournament this year. The Wildcats return 15 players from last year, but they must find a replacement for graduated goalkeeper Greg Cathell. Newcomer Josh Scotton will figure prominently in that search. Evans feels his team's speed will be the key to the Wildcats accomplishing their goal of a state tournament berth. Following is a capsule preview of the Wildcats' 2001 campaign. Head Coach: Rick Evans (first year) 2000 Record: 7-5 overall and conference Key Returning Players: Derek Casper (MF), Travis Ralph (F), Brandon Figgs (F), Brett Lewis (FB), Tyler Benson (FB) Key Players Lost: Greg Cathell (GK) Key Newcomers: Halder Garcia (MF/F), Cody Collin (MF), Josh Scotton (GK) Coach Evans' Comments: "We're hoping to make the state tournament. We have 15 returning players who form a nice nucleus. Team speed should be an asset." Delmar Index | Sports Index | News Index |
