NOTES: Middletown is no stranger to the Division II state playoffs. Despite last year's semifinal loss to St. Elizabeth, the Cavaliers are one of the most storied programs in state history, including three straight Division II titles from 1997-99. This will be the Cavaliers' sixth straight Division II tourney appearance ... This will be Middletown's final season in Division II. Due to an enrollment increase, the Cavaliers will move up to Division I next season to take on the likes of Newark ... Middletown has won six straight Blue Hen Conference Flight B titles ... The Cavaliers' wins include a 14-7 win over perennial upstate power Salesianum on Oct. 27 ... The Cavaliers can score a lot of points but their defense has been most impressive, allowing less than 10 points a game. The defense, led by Shawn Tolson, Curtis Mercer, Nathan Haas, John Pursell, Rausheen Lively and Tom Price, completely grounded all-state Smyrna running back Mike Pennewell, who was stuffed for minus-4 yards rushing in a 36-0 loss ... The offense is led by quarterback Mike Potts, receiver Shawn Tolson and running backs Gary Earl and Rausheen Lively ... Potts has had a couple of big games, throwing a 65-yard TD pass to Tolson in a win over Concord, running for two TDs in a double-overtime win over Caravel, throwing for 156 yards and 2 TDs in a win over Hodgson, throwing for 86 yards and a TD against Salesianum, and throwing for 127 yards and a TD in a win over Bel Air ... Lively ran for 65 yards and two TDs against Bel Air, 96 yards against Smyrna, 75 against Salesianum, 126 yards against Hodgson, and 89 against Caravel ... Earl rushed for 109 yards including a 90-yard TD run against Bel Air, two TDs against Smyrna, and one touchdown against Concord ... Tolson caught 5 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown against Hodgson, scored on a 7-yard run in the second overtime to beat Caravel, caught a 65-yard TD toss from Potts against Concord, and returned a punt 56 yards for a score against Bel Air.
