Field Hockey Preview |

Challenge in 2001 Photos: Brittany Croll (left) and Leigh Ann Ambrose (22) were two of the Indians' top scorers last season. The Indian River High School field hockey program made a major turnaround in 2000.
IR also nearly knocked off Henlopen Conference champion Delmar in a 3-2 overtime loss late in the season. But that success will not be as easy to duplicate this season, believes head coach Kathleen Fluharty, as other teams gear up for IR instead of looking past the Indians. The Indians appear to be up to the task, however, with several leading scorers from last season's team returning. Despite the loss of Cara Deldeo to college softball and Christina Gabriel (Bridgewater) and Laura Ford (Western Maryland) to college field hockey, the Indians return six key players from a year ago. Forwards Leigh Ann Ambrose, Brittany Croll and Leslie Morin, midfielder Julene Gamble, and back Dayna Elliott all found the goal last season, with Ambrose recording a hat trick in one game. Following is a capsule preview of the Indians' 2001 season. Head Coach: Kathleen Fluharty (third year, 19-12-1) 2000 Record: 13-3 overall, 10-3 conference, lost to Cape Henlopen in state quarterfinals Key Returning Players: Brittany Croll (F), Leigh Ann Ambrose (F), Julene Gamble (M), Dayna Elliott (B), Leslie Morin (F), Katlin Harkes (B) Key Players Lost: Cara Deldeo, Christina Gabriel (Bridgewater), Laura Ford (Western Maryland) Key Newcomers: Camea Dorey (B), Mandy Richards (M), Jackie Gray (F) Coach Fluharty's Comments: "We're excited to carry on a winning season. Last year was a drastic improvement and a fun ride since the year before we were 6-9-1. The girls will experience other teams getting up to play against us and expecting to be the underdog."
