Do Have Experience The Indian River High School boys' soccer team has plenty of soccer playing experience. It just comes packaged in young players. Head coach Howard Gerken's club lost three key players to graduation from last year's 6-9-1 club, but it returns more than a half-dozen players with previous varsity experience. The returnees include some of last year's leading scorers, such as midfielders Danny Carroll and David Gichner, as well as goalkeeper Jason Nauman, who kept the Indians in games last season against some of the state's better teams. Following is a capsule preview of the Indians' 2001 season. Head Coach: Howard Gerken (second year, 6-9-1) 2000 Record: 6-9-1 overall Key Returning Players: Danny Carroll (MF), Jeremy Showell (Def.), David Gichner (MF), Jason Nauman (GK), Jonathan Forte (MF), Zach Ralph (MF), Brandt Mais (Def.), Justin Brooks-Ward (St.), Matt Powell (St.) Key Players Lost: Zach Gray (Def.), Dennis Janssen (Def.), Justin Polly (MF) Key Newcomers: Ernesto Reuda (GK), Ted Pikulsky (Def.), John Giorgilli (Def.), Ryan Walsh (MF), Sam Svenson (MF) Coach Gerken's Comments: "We have a young but experienced team with good skills. They're learning to work together as a unit. We will play an attractive brand of soccer." IR Index | Sports Index |
