Milford Nipped
by Smyrna, 14-13
2001 Recap ...

Friday, Sept. 21, 2001
Smyrna 14, Milford 13

The Bucs suffered their second straight loss to a Division II team when they missed a two-point conversion with just 31 seconds left in the game.

Now 1-2 overall, the Bucs pulled within 14-13 on a 1-yard run by quarterback Jon Webb.

Rather than go for the tie and overtime, however, Milford head coach Jim Donato opted for a two-point conversion because he thought the Bucs would lose in overtime with Smyrna running back Mike Pennewell, who rushed for 214 yards on 22 carries, on the field.

Webb, however, was stopped cold to give Smyrna the win.

The Bucs' final touchdown was set up by a bobbled punt snap that Milford receoverd on the Smyrna 29 with 50 seconds to go.

Webb then hit wide receiver Matt Bailey with a 28-yard pass to the Smyrna 1 to set up Webb's plunge.

Pennewell, a first-team all-stater a year ago, struck fear into the Bucs with an 84-yard touchdown run on the game's second play.

Milford came back with a 24-yard drive following an interception. The drive was capped by fullback Prince Kemmerlin's four-yard run.

The Eagles recaptured the lead at 14-7 following a Milford fumble in the third quarter. That 51-yard drive was capped by running back Josh Cherriman's 41-yard run.

Milford visits Polytech on Friday, Sept. 28, at 7:30 p.m. Smyrna is now 2-0 overall.
