Bucs Seeded 8th in Tourney

The Milford soccer team earned the 8th seed in the 2001 Delaware High School Boys' Soccer Tournament. The Bucs face No. 9 Tatnall in a first round match on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m. at Polytech. Milford is one of three Sussex County teams in the tournament this year.

Milford 0, Sussex Tech 0 (2 OT)

The Bucs fell behind Dover in the race for the Henlopen Conference title by a half-game with the tie.

At 9-1-1 in the conference and 9-2-1 overall, Milford needs Seaford to beat Dover (10-1 conference) on Tuesday, Oct. 23, while it beats Sussex Central the same night.

Dover, which beat Caesar Rodney 2-0 on Thursday, can clinch the title with a win or tie against Seaford because it beat Milford during the regular season.

Against Tech, Milford led 20-13 in shots and 9-0 in corner kicks but couldn't get the ball past Raven goalkeeper Daniel Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald finished with 15 saves while Buc goalkeeper Ryan Sutcliffe had 7 saves for his shutout.

Milford 4, Seaford 0

The Bucs continued their perfect month of October with their seventh straight win. Janel Legros scored two Milford goals while Bryce Plummer and Keith Brown scored a goal apiece. Milford led 14-10 in shots in improving to 9-1 in the conference and 9-2 overall. Milford kept pace with Dover for first place in the Henlopen Conference. Ryan Sutcliffe posted 7 saves for the shutout.

Milford 2, Caesar Rodney 0

The Bucs beat Caesar Rodney for the first time in a decade and moved into a tie for first place in the Henlopen Conference standings with Dover.

Now 8-1 in the conference and 8-2 overall, Milford is tied with Dover for the conference leadership after Dover's stunning 4-3 loss to Indian River in another match on Thursday.

If the two teams would end up tied, the Senators would have the advantage in a tie-breaker by virtue of a 3-1 win over Milford on Sept. 24.

Against CR, the Bucs took a 1-0 lead on a goal by junior midfielder Keith Brown just seven minutes into the match. Sophomore midfielder Kyle Rothermel iced the win with a goal with 19:09 remaining.

Goalkeeper Robert Sutcliffe, meanwhile, made those goals stand up with a seven-save shutout. He thwarted CR's best chance on a first half breakaway with a diving save.

The Bucs outshot CR 18-10.

In the conference race, Milford has three tough matches remaining at Seaford on Oct. 16, at home against Sussex Tech on Oct. 18, and at red-hot Sussex Central on Oct. 23. Central is 8-2 in the conference with five straight victories.

Dover has three conference matches remaining, as well, including a home match against rival Caesar Rodney on Oct. 18 and a match at Seaford on Oct. 23.

Bryce Plummer scored three goals and Simon Mumford added two more as the Bucs rose to 7-1 in the Henlopen Conference and 7-2 overall. Jusly Legros, Jose Nunez and Kyle Rothermel scored the Bucs' other goals. Milford led 34-4 in shots.

Milford 4, Indian River 2

Janel Legros scored a pair of goals to lift the Bucs to 6-2 overall with a key Henlopen Conference win. Bryce Plummer and Jose Nunez also scored for Milford, which dominated play with a 35-17 advantage in shots. Ryan Sutcliffe posted 11 saves in goal.

Milford 4, Smyrna 0

The Bucs outshot Smyrna 38-6 to roll to the Henlopen Conference win. Keith Brown, Jose Nunez and Simon Mumford scored goals for Milford. Goalie Ryan Sutcliffe finished with 6 saves.

Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001
Milford 8, Polytech 2

The Bucs rose to 4-1 in the Henlopen Conference and 4-2 overall with a dominating performance. Janel Legros led the onslaught with four goals. Jose Nunez, Jusly Legros, Simon Mumford and John Bourdejour scored the Bucs' other goals. Ryan Sutcliffe and Daniel Gorrin combined for 11 saves for Milford, which outshot Polytech 39-18.

Milford 4, Lake Forest 0

The Bucs raised their record to 3-2 overall with the Henlopen Conference shutout. Bryce Plummer, Janel Legros, Jusly Legros and Keith Brown all scored goals for Milford, which outshot Lake Forest 48-9.

Monday, Sept. 24, 2001
Dover 3, Milford 1 (OT)

The Bucs fell took the perennial power Senators to the limit before succumbing in overtime in a Henlopen Conference match. The match was tied 1-1 after regulation but Dover's Mike Merritt and Ian Sylvester put the match away for Dover with overtime scores. Simon Mumford scored Milford's goal in regulation while Ryan Sutcliffe posted 16 saves. The Bucs trailed 18-11 in shots and 4-3 in corner kicks.

Milford 4, Cape Henlopen 2

The Bucs got two goals apiece from Janel Legros and Bryce Plummer to collect the Henlopen Conference victory. Ryan Sutcliffe recorded 8 saves in goal.

Milford 3, Delmar 1

The Bucs rode goals by John Bourdejour, Simon Mumford and Bryce Plummer to the Henlopen Conference win. Goalkeeper Brian Sutcliffe recorded 9 saves. Milford had a 28-17 advantage in shots.
