Knights Must Fill
Injured Perez' Shoes

The Sussex Central High School boys' soccer team had all the makings of another state tournament team capable of challenging perennial favorites Caesar Rodney and Dover for the Henlopen Conference crown in 2001.

And while those are still the goals of head coach Kevin Cash, he realizes they will be tougher to accomplish this season with the potentially season-ending injury suffered by Dilmar Perez, who led the Golden Knights in scoring during their 13-3 state tournament season in 2000.

Perez, a standout forward, broke his arm in two places during a summer league game and may not be able to play at all this season, Cash said. Perez' cast will be shortened in October. "If we're lucky, he may be back in mid-October," said Cash. "But we're not sure if he'll play at all this season."

While that is a cruel blow, the Golden Knights do have plenty of talent returning, including first team all-conference picks Francisco Chavez, Trey Bell and goalkeeper Mike Dondarski. They form the heart of a defense that is expected to be very strong this season.

Offensively, the Knights will ask forward Phillip Hastings to replace Perez as well as he can. They'll also count on midfielder Wyatt Hall, a transfer from Sussex Tech, midfielder Andrej Goette, a German foreign exchange student, and freshman forward Edy Garcia, who will likely see more action as the season wears on.

They will be relied on to help replace the loss of graduates like all-stater Matt Wilson, now a freshman at Salisbury University.

Following is a capsule preview of the Golden Knights' 2001 season.

Head Coach: Kevin Cash (seventh year)

2000 Record: 13-3 overall, 10-2 conference, lost to St. Andrew's in first round of state tournament

Key Returning Players: Francisco Chavez (Swp.), Trey Bell (Stop.), Mike Dondarski (GK), Eulalio Perez (F), John Cordrey (Def.), Orion Camerson (MF)

Key Players Lost: Matt Wilson (Salisbury University), Ben Rudolph (F), Corey Strohmeyer (F), Erik Hopkins (FB), James Leyh (MF), Arturo Dominguez (MF)

Key Newcomers: Wyatt Hall (MF), Andrej Goette (MF), Phillip Hastings (F), Edy Garcia (F)

Coach Cash's Comments: "Our strength is we do have a lot of good returning players. The nuclues of our team, especially on the defensive end, is back, so we should be strong there. As far as goals for the season, we want to make a run at a conference championship. We missed that by one game last year. That's always our goal and I consider us to be one of the favorites, but the conference will be real tough this year with Caesar Rodney, Dover and Milford. We also want to make it to the state tournament and make a good showing there."
